To the people of Estonia I say "Ma olen eestlane".

It is a great honor, and a great responsibility, to address you. As you know, we have the distinct pleasure of having Priit (whom my son, Sam, calls “The Estonian Master”) staying with us at our home in Portland, Oregon.

It has been a great joy to get to know Priit, and I now consider him to be a close personal friend. He is a man of many talents, and one who has many positive attributes—attributes that I have come to admire and respect, attributes like kindness, patience, sangfroid, devotion, loyalty, and humor.

Beyond this, however, it is delightful to hangout with Priit. We’ve done a lot of things together: gone to pharmaceutical dinners, watched sci fi TV, walked and talked, grappled, and just hung out. I know that I have been touched by his companionship, and I also know that my son’s relationship with Priit has been a tremendous personal benefit to him.

To the larger picture of US and Estonian relations...I can say, with unshakeable certainly, that Americans loathed the tyranny of the Soviet Union over the people of Estonia. Americans, like people generally, and Estonians particularly, are a freedom-loving people. We want people to be free—free to make their own choices, to read and write what they want, to speak to who they want about what they want, to protest, to gather, to criticize the government, to travel, to live free from the interference of religion in state institutions, and to live their lives without repression.

It is my hope that inviting Priit into our home and into our lives has not merely benefited myself, my wife, my son and Priit, but that it has benefited the relationship between our two countries. To the people of Estonia I say this: Let the bond formed between myself and Priit serve as a model for the bond that Americans would like to forge with the people of Estonia. A bond founded on good faith, trust and respect. I hope that this experience has brought us all closer together. I am honored to know Priit, and to have had this opportunity to address you.
